Meaning: climb

Every once in a while I run across a kanji that looks like a picture to me.  Yes, I know, many kanji are supposed to be pictographs, but that’s usually very abstract to me.  When I say they look like something to me, it doesn’t always look like what it’s supposed to mean… like 登.  To me this kanji looks like a sumo stage/arena.  That doesn’t have a whole lot to do with “climb”…
